Village Green Retirement Campus is growing. By this fall, a dozen new cottages will be ready for occupancy on the 20-acre campus in Federal Way.
Site work is already underway. Construction on the cottages, some of which are designed as attached units, is in full swing.
The new cottages will be an addition to the 16 existing cottages and three apartment buildings – one offering assisted living and two offering independent living – at the corner of First Avenue South and South 356th Street.
Larger than the existing cottages, the new cottages will range from approximately 1,500 square feet to 2,098 square feet – not counting one- or two-car garages. Three floor plans are available: two-bedroom/two-bathroom, three-bedroom/two bathroom and three bedroom/three bathroom with a loft/bonus room.
Owned by Federal Way residents Monte and Diane Powell, Village Green opened in 1997. Their daughter, Heidi Powell Swartz, is the developer for the new cottages. Their sons, Brooks and Todd Powell, are the general contractors. The architect is Jogi Minatogawa.
The popularity of the current cottages and the shortage of similar options in the market led Village Green to build more cottages, said Ms. Swartz. The 12 cottages that will open this fall are phase one of a multi-phase plan that could eventually add a total of 37 cottages.
“Our cottages are a great alternative for people who are ready to downsize but are looking for something other than an apartment,” said Ms. Swartz. “Plus, cottage residents can choose to take advantage of all the amenities available at Village Green, including meals, housekeeping, transportation and recreation opportunities.”
Other perks of life at Village Green include walking trails, attractive landscaping and gardens where residents can grow their own flowers and vegetables.
